The Wayfarer takes a courtside seat

Spotted is our style journal: frames we've noticed doing the rounds on red carpets, courtsides and film sets — and what makes them work.

Every British summer has a frame, and this year the stands at SW19 have quietly settled the question. Between the linen suits and the Pimm's, the silhouette turning up again and again is the one that never really left: the Wayfarer. Actor Oli Green was photographed arriving at Wimbledon in an oversized black take on the shape (via Hello!) — proof, if any were needed, that the trapezoid still earns its courtside seat.

Why it works

The Wayfarer's trick is its geometry: a confident brow line and a gentle downward tilt that flatters almost everyone. On rounder and softer face shapes the angular acetate adds structure; on square faces the subtle taper keeps things from looking severe. It's also the rare frame that reads equally right with tailoring and a t-shirt — which is exactly why it keeps turning up everywhere from film sets to Centre Court.

Wearing it now

The current mood is scale and gloss: bigger lenses, deeper acetates, worn with something crisp rather than casual. Classic Black is the courtside default; Tortoise warms things up for summer. If you're unsure which width sits right, our frame-width finder will point you to the size that fits.
